Advertising: Key conventions

1) What key conventions of print adverts can you find and what are the connotations or deeper meanings of each convention? For each convention, write about how it communicates meaning to the audience. See the Maltesers advert above for an example of how to do this.

  • the picture shows us a sentence saying tastes the rain bow and there is numerous skittles of all different flavours and taste
  • the logo of the sweets is the name in white writing and it is called skittles because it is based of a historical sports game of the same name
  • the slogan at the bottom is in blue blended into then background of the sky and the use of the word 'taste' tells us that maybe each flavour has a good taste and has something  to do with there colours?!?!

  • the colour scheme of the packet is a varies of colours mainly red with the name in white making it very recognisable to there customers

2) What is the USP (unique selling point) for Skittles and how do you know? Does the advert use any of persuasive techniques listed above?

The USP (unique selling point) for this Skittles advert is the idea that it is mainly meant towards kids or young children more than any other demographic. This  is partially because of the big range of colours spread out to make a rainbow in the back.
